2 Corinthians 6:14 Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion hath light with darkness?
This verse is obviously dealing with personal relationships; "BE NOT UNEQUALLY YOKED WITH UNBELIEVERS". In other words those who truly know the Lord Jesus should not be in physical, earthly relationships with those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Just as it is generally preached, a believer should not be married to an unbeliever and true Christians do not have as their life style friendships that do evil. This is why the words fellowship and communion are used in the rhetorical questions. Fellowship is spending time together; hanging out together as in friendship and communion is a sharing of their activities, their life style.
Verse 15 instructs us again with a rhetorical question, Does Jesus hang out with Satan? Teaching us that even on our spiritual side we should not have fellowship with satan.
Verse 16 in turn ties together both the physical and spiritual aspects of our problem. "And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
Therefore, the Lord tells us why we should get rid of all of our physical (earthly) and spiritual idols. It does not tell us that we do not have them. In fact, we do have the Light and Darkness together. That is why the Lord Holy Spirit through Paul is instructing us and the Corinthian Christians to NOT do these things, for we are HIS temple. That is why verse 17 is written "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you," So the Lord Jesus has told these Christians to stop having Light and darkness in their physical and spiritual lives. If we do this then verse 18 comes into effect "And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."
The Lord Jesus then continues through Paul to tell us again all he wrote above, That we as Christians must remove the darkness from our Light if we want the promises of the Lord Jesus.
Chapter 16:1 "Having therefore these promises", the promises that the Lord is talking about is all the promises that HE has given to HIS sons and Daughters just as verse 18 (above) states. Then informs and instructs us to CLEANSE our selves. That is for CHRISTIANS to cleanse their selves from the filth of our unholy relationships in the flesh and in the spirit.
1Cor 16:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
It is quite clear and easily understood from the same verse and the entire passage when taken in context that the Lord Jesus is telling us just the opposite of the misinterpretation that has have been given to the church. Darkness and Light can and are in the same place at the same time and we as Christians must by the process of sanctification cleanse ourselves from darkness, which represents satan and his demons.
We can very easily go through out the entire Word of God, from Genesis to Revelations and show that Darkness and Light does dwell together in the physical and the spiritual bodies of Christians. As it is written the Light shined OUT of the Darkness. The Light did not cast out the darkness in this case but shone OUT of it. The two are obviously together.
How did Death enter INTO Adam and Eve and the world if darkness cannot be where the Light is? Did not Adam and Eve die both physically and spiritual? Death is darkness, as it is written satan was a murderer from the beginning. Yet, they were still CHRISTIANS in today's sense of the word. They worshiped and gave thanks and sacrifices to the Lord Jesus. But yet they died for death remained in them as it does us.
What about Paul? Many have no difficulty in correctly saying that messengers from God are angels but they must reverse their understanding in what a messenger from satan is in 2 Corinthians 12:7 "Wherefore, lest I should be unduly lifted up, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, that he might buffet me, -lest I should be unduly lifted up."
The verse clearly states exactly what the thorn in his flesh is, a messenger from satan, a demon. The Word is absolutely clear and concise on the matter. Paul had an evil spirit in his flesh. That is in his body. Christians can obviously have demons. It is a useless argument whether the thorn is a speech impediment or if Paul was lame. That is why the word does not tell us what the fleshly result of this particular demon. It is simply telling us that Christians can and do have demons. Furthermore, we learn that the Lord Jesus has a reason for the demonization of Christians. Whether it is to led us out of sin (Gen 4:27, Psa 64:6, Psa 94:20, Luk 11:36) or as in this case to keep us humble before HIM.
And if we look in Matthew and in Luke which is the one we will use since the 11th chapter of Luke is the deliverance chapter. Verse 36 tells us plainly that darkness and light can and does dwell together in the same body. The teachers of false doctrine want too and continuously look over the words "if" and "having no part dark".
Luke 11:36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.
In other words: IF we do not have any parts of darkness in our bodies then we shall be full of Light. But if we do have dark parts in our bodies and life then we will not be totally full of Light.
